The gap

These families are not waiting for charity

Across Ethiopia, hardworking families are earning, saving and planning, yet homeownership keeps moving out of reach. The 23,000 families with Key Housing have already contributed over ETB 3.5 billion of their own money.

But homes must be built today, while contributions arrive over 30 years. That timing gap is the only thing standing between these families and their keys.

Materials, labour and land cannot wait three decades. Your gift bridges that gap, bringing construction forward rather than replacing what families already pay.

490 homes are the beginning. 100,000 is the goal.

See the journey from waiting to owning

A short documentary on the families behind the numbers: their savings, their patience, and the keys now in their hands. It opens at sunrise over Addis Ababa, a city of more than four million people, and ends at a front door.

From renting to owning

The families behind the numbers

After years of renting, we finally have a home. The walls are ours. This house means everything to us.

Abeba, 35

When I was approved for this home, I cried. Through Key-CHF, I could save with my community, and we built something together. Now my family has security.

Yohannes, 41

I joined to stop wasting money on rent. Now I am saving, building equity, and in ten years I will own a home.

Marta, 28

Three of the 490 families who now hold the keys to their own homes.

Before you give

A community housing-finance organisation founded in 2023 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It operates the Key Common Housing Fund (Key-CHF), through which 23,000 registered member families pool their savings to build homes together. To date the fund has delivered 490 homes across five active development sites.

No. Members have already contributed more than ETB 3.5 billion of their own money and continue to pay. The challenge is timing: homes must be delivered within roughly ten years, while member contributions arrive over thirty. Your gift bridges that gap, bringing construction forward rather than substituting for member payments.

Housing construction, site infrastructure, building materials, engineering supervision, project acceleration, and affordability support. Priority goes to reducing waiting periods for registered low- and middle-income families.

Through segregated accounting, dual-signature payment authorisation, procurement review, and bank co-management of member funds. Finances are audited annually by external auditors, construction is supervised by independent engineers, and records are kept on a secure digital platform with bank-grade encryption and role-based access.

Donor reporting is issued at least semi-annually and includes milestones, construction progress, financial-utilisation summaries, and beneficiary stories with photos wherever possible. The GoFundMe campaign page also carries public milestone updates as the campaign progresses.

Zakat and Sadaqah-eligible giving options are available. If you would like guidance on directing your gift accordingly, contact the team before donating.

Yes. Individual donors, Ethiopian diaspora communities, philanthropists, institutional investors and development foundations all have meaningful roles. Every contribution accelerates the timeline. For partnership conversations, write to the team.

Turn savings into homes, and waiting into owning

23,000 families have made their commitment. They have saved. They are building. Now they need partners.
